Procedures / How to Screen Grab

You may be asked by a member of our support staff to provide them with a screen grab. A screen grab is an actual image of what is displayed on your screen, this image can be saved as a bitmap, attached to an email and forwarded to our support staff; so they have an exact image of what you can see which may assist them in finding a remedy to your problem.

To carry out a screen grab, follow these simple steps:

  • Ensure that the window you wish to grab is the active window on the desktop, to activate it click the cursor inside the window
  • Once the window is activated, press the Ctrl + Alt + Print Scrn keys on the keyboard. This copies an image of the active window and stores it on a clipboard
  • If you are asked to grab the whole screen and not an application window just press the Print Scrn key
  • Open Microsoft® Paint by selecting Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ Paint
  • When Microsoft® Paint has been selected the following dialog is displayed:

  • Using the Edit menu select Paste
  • NOTE: A warning may appear stating that the clipboard is larger than the bitmap, if it does select Yes
  • The Screen Grab will now appear in the Microsoft® Paint window
  • Select File/ Save and the following dialog will appear:

  • Browse to the required folder, type in a relevant File Name and click on Save
  • The Screen Grab is now saved as a .bmp file and may be attached to an outgoing email
