Datapath technology chosen for Hong Kong Marine Department Training Centre

Technology from Datapath, world-leading engineers of visual solutions, has been deployed in a landmark project at the Hong Kong Marine Department Training Centre. Facilitated by the company’s close distributor and technical support partner in Asia, Mindstec, the centre is now leveraging the benefits of five video wall controllers, 25 capture cards, 10 graphics cards, a selection of processors and industry-leading software, all produced by Datapath.

The challenge
Located at Government Dockyard on Stonecutters Island, the Hong Kong Marine Department Training Centre provides professional maritime training to departmental officers. Within the facility can be found traditional lecture rooms fitted with full AV teaching aids, alongside a variety of computer-based simulation equipment.

Advanced equipment is essential for providing trainees with realistic simulations that allow them to work as if they were aboard an actual ship. However, with the existing projection and video wall systems reaching the end of their natural life, problems were beginning to arise, including slow-responding wall control software.

The solution
To tackle the issues, system integrator Media-Go Engineering Ltd chose Mindstec to help improve the set-up using five Datapath VSN video wall controllers, which have been duly deployed in three training bridges and additional instructor rooms.

Among further Datapath products now in place at the training centre are 25 four-channel VisionDVI/RGB/HD capture cards, 10 four-port ImageDP4 graphics cards with DVI adaptors, various processors and Datapath’s supporting wall control software (four licences).

One of the most sophisticated applications involved creating a high-end, 270° seamless edge blending video wall to simulate scenarios on a modern ship's bridge using high-resolution animations. Thanks to the deployment of Datapath VSN video wall controllers with user-friendly control interfaces, operators can easily manage video wall content.

The result
In total, 15 x 55” screens are used in the video wall, which is controlled by a VSN970 with RPSU (redundant power supply unit) and 16GB of memory. Also used are four VisionHD4 capture cards and four ImageDP4/DVI graphics cards.

“Mindstec provided us with timely and comprehensive technical support during the four-month project,” says William Ng, General Manager of Media-Go. “The Datapath video wall controllers and processors they provided are easy-to-use and able to show seamless simulations across multiple displays. Our client is satisfied with the upgraded video walls and we would definitely recommend these products to our clients in the future.”
